NEW YORK:<\/strong> Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said the world is undergoing fundamental changes and that a more just multipolar international system is taking shape, while accusing Western countries of using pressure, force and double standards to preserve their former dominance and privileges.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lavrov outlined Russia\u2019s positions on the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, Palestine, Iran, the Persian Gulf, Cuba, the Balkans and global security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said countries of the Global South and East were emerging as independent centers of development and were assuming greater responsibility for ensuring security in their respective regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lavrov, these countries support international law, reject external pressure and advocate development and prosperity for all states rather than a select group of countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said this approach formed the basis of Russia\u2019s foreign policy and guided its cooperation within the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and other international organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine Conflict and Negotiations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov accused Western countries of undermining the European security system and supporting an anti-Russian government in Ukraine in an effort to contain Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He alleged that several European countries were seeking to obstruct a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine conflict and undermine prospects for the resumption of negotiations, despite interest in talks from several parties, including the administration of US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov also accused Western countries of supplying weapons to Ukraine and supporting attacks involving drones and missiles against Russian territory and civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said attempts to achieve a strategic defeat of Russia would ultimately lead the countries fueling the conflict toward a strategic deadlock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran and Persian Gulf Tensions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov condemned what he described as US and Israeli use of force against Iran, saying civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities operating under International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring and safeguards had been targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said such attacks had caused serious damage to the credibility of the IAEA and the global nuclear non-proliferation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov also warned that armed tensions in the Persian Gulf and around the Strait of Hormuz were affecting international shipping and trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said confidence-building among the Gulf littoral states, Arab countries and Iran was essential to resolving the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lavrov, Russia\u2019s proposal for collective security in the Persian Gulf seeks to establish a stable regional security system, and Moscow is prepared to work with other responsible countries to contribute to stability in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov Calls Palestinian Statehood Inevitable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the Middle East, Lavrov said the time had come to resolve the core issue of the conflict and establish an independent Palestinian state in accordance with UN resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Gaza had not achieved lasting peace despite the UN Security Council\u2019s approval of a US-backed Gaza peace proposal about a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov said elderly people, women and children were still being killed in Gaza and that the humanitarian situation remained critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also warned of the deteriorating situation in the West Bank, citing continued expansion of Israeli settlements. He said that if the process continued, there would eventually be insufficient territory left for the establishment of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavrov warned that if the creation of a Palestinian state became impossible, Israel\u2019s security would also remain under permanent threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged the United Nations and its member states to take urgent and extraordinary measures to change the course of the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian foreign minister also called for international attention to conflicts and crises in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, South Sudan and other parts of Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
