NEW YORK: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has called for maintaining human judgment and control at every stage of artificial intelligence (AI) design, development and integration, warning against allowing AI to become another dimension of the global arms race.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the UN Security Council briefing on \u201cArtificial Intelligence and International Security\u201d, convened by France in its capacity as Council President for September, Dar presented Pakistan\u2019s position on the emerging security challenges associated with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dar stressed the need for restraint and confidence-building measures to address the risks of miscalculation and increasingly compressed decision-making in the military domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cautioned that efforts to manage the rapid development of AI must not turn into a new form of technological gatekeeping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measures introduced in the name of safety, he said, should not become instruments for denying access to technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deputy prime minister called for AI governance to be addressed through representative and inclusive forums under UN auspices, with universal participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dar welcomed the first UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance held in Geneva and highlighted Pakistan\u2019s founding membership of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), describing it as a practical step toward promoting AI for the benefit of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s commitment to strengthening international cooperation on AI, bridging the global AI divide and promoting equitable access to AI for peace and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Security Council briefing was attended by senior representatives from Council members and other countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
