As America celebrates 250 years of independence, there is an important question we should be willing to ask: Have all Americans truly experienced the promise of equality, liberty and justice that this country was founded upon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For millions of American Muslims, the answer is complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muslims are not on the sidelines of the American story. They are doctors, engineers, scientists, researchers, teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs, business owners, athletes, public servants, civic leaders and elected officials. They are raising families, building businesses, serving patients, educating children and contributing to communities across this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, despite these contributions, many American Muslims continue to experience questions about equality, inclusion and, increasingly, whether they are fully safe and accepted in the communities they call home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What concerns me most is not disagreement about policy or religion. Disagreement is part of a healthy democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What concerns me is when an entire religious community begins to be discussed through political narratives that do not reflect the reality of the people who actually make up that community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is difficult to understand how political organizations or elected officials could support efforts that appear to single out a vulnerable religious minority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a line between political debate and making an entire faith community the subject of political targeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should be very careful about crossing that line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-five years after 9\/11<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This September marks 25 years since the devastating attacks of September 11, 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those attacks changed America forever. They also changed the lives of American Muslims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the years that followed, Muslims experienced increased scrutiny, surveillance, profiling and suspicion. Measures introduced in the name of national security often had consequences for ordinary Muslim families who had nothing to do with terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many Muslim Americans, 9\/11 was followed by a long period of having to explain that being Muslim and being American were not contradictory identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, another concern has emerged: how Islam and Muslims are presented to the next generation of American students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 4, 2026, the Texas State Board of Education took final action on revised high-school social studies standards covering U.S. history, government, world history and world geography. The official state record confirms the final-adoption process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics, including Muslim advocates and some educators, have raised concerns about portions of the new standards dealing with Islam and early Islamic history. The debate has included questions about the wording, historical context and treatment of Islam in relation to terrorism and political violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Muslim parents, this is not simply an academic disagreement.It is about how their children \u2014 and their classmates \u2014 learn to understand one of the world\u2019s major religions and, by extension, the people sitting next to them in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History should challenge students to think.It should give them context. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should acknowledge complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And most importantly, it should be accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From profiling to political targetingFor a quarter-century, American Muslims have worked to build bridges with their fellow citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And despite the challenges, millions of Americans have stood with us.That is one of the things I love about this country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

America has never been a place where everyone agrees. Its strength comes from the ability of people with different faiths, backgrounds, cultures and political views to live together under the same Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That principle matters now more than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When political rhetoric turns an entire religious community into a target, the impact goes far beyond politics. It can create fear, encourage extremists and make ordinary families wonder whether they truly belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequences are especially serious for young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Muslim child should not have to wonder whether being Muslim makes them less American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Muslim physician treating patients, a nurse caring for the sick, an engineer developing new technology, a teacher educating children, an entrepreneur creating jobs, an athlete representing the United States or a public servant representing constituents should not have to prove their patriotism because of their faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Muslims Politicians<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The real face of American Muslims<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people behind the political talking points are real human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are doctors. Engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers.Scientists.Researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small-business owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corporate executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civic leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And public servants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data tell a very different story from the stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education<\/strong>: a community investing in knowledgeAccording to the Pew Research Center\u2019s latest Religious Landscape Study, 44% of Muslim adults in the United States have a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher, compared with 35% of U.S. adults overall. Pew also reports that 26% of Muslim adults have a postgraduate degree, such as a master\u2019s or doctorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education is clearly an important part of the Muslim American experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that investment can be seen everywhere\u2014from classrooms and universities to hospitals, laboratories, technology companies and research institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medicine<\/strong> and<\/strong> medical<\/strong> research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contribution of people from Muslim-majority countries to American medicine is particularly measurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A peer-reviewed study published in JAMA Network Open examined 1,065,606 physicians listed in the 2019 American Medical Association Physician Masterfile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers identified 48,354 physicians who were citizens of Muslim-majority countries when they entered medical school. They represented 4.5% of the entire U.S. physician workforce and 18.4% of international medical graduates in the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction is important: the study measured country of citizenship, not individual religious identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the numbers demonstrate something significant about the contribution of physicians from Muslim-majority countries to American healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These doctors work in hospitals, clinics, research institutions and medical practices across the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They care for American patients every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are part of the American healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Science<\/strong>, engineering<\/strong> and<\/strong> technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Muslim contribution to science and technology is not simply a story from the distant past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Americans with Muslim backgrounds work throughout America\u2019s scientific and technological institutions\u2014in medicine, engineering, aerospace, mathematics, computer science and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider Dr. Tahani Amer, an engineer who immigrated to the United States from Egypt and went on to work at NASA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her career included engineering and leadership roles at NASA, as well as efforts to encourage students to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her story is one example of something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

America\u2019s scientific strength has always depended on people bringing different experiences, cultures and perspectives into the same laboratories, universities and institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the historical record matters too.Muslim scholars made important contributions to mathematics, astronomy, optics and medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Khwarizmi is associated with the systematic development of algebra, and his name is the origin of the term \u201calgorithm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ibn al-Haytham made major contributions to optics and the study of vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al-Razi, Al-Zahrawi and Ibn Sina produced influential medical works that were studied and translated beyond the Islamic world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of this means Muslims \u201cinvented modern science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Science is a human enterprise. Muslim scholars themselves drew upon Greek, Persian, Indian and other intellectual traditions and then expanded that knowledge through observation, experimentation, mathematics and scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is actually the more important lesson.Human knowledge grows when civilizations learn from one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the history we should be teaching our children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public service and government<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Muslim American contribution is also increasingly visible in public life.In 2007, Keith Ellison became the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress, according to the U.S. House Office of the Historian.Since then, other Muslim Americans have served in Congress and at state and local levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever one\u2019s political views about individual officeholders, their presence represents an important development in the American story: Muslim citizens are participating in the same democratic institutions as every other American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They serve on school boards.They serve in city governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They work in public administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They serve as judges and attorneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They serve in law enforcement and the military.They run for elected office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They take the same oaths and accept the same responsibilities as their fellow citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sports<\/strong>: representing America on the world stageMuslim Americans have also represented the United States on some of the world\u2019s biggest sporting stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ibtihaj Muhammad, the American Muslim fencer, became the first U.S. Olympian to compete while wearing a hijab. She went on to win a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics as part of the U.S. saber team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her achievement was about more than fencing.She represented the United States while openly embracing her faith\u2014and became an inspiration to young athletes around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there is Muhammad Ali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ali became one of the most recognizable athletes in American history. His Olympic achievement, world heavyweight championships and advocacy for racial justice made him much more than a boxer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He became a global figure whose faith, courage and willingness to challenge injustice shaped American culture far beyond the boxing ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Olympic arena to professional sports, Muslim Americans have demonstrated something that should not need to be explained: Faith and patriotism are not competing identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can coexist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When hate comes to the mosque<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, reports began circulating that Islamophobic groups intended to demonstrate outside or visit mosques during Friday prayers, when Muslim congregations are at their largest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Muslim communities, that naturally created concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But something remarkable happened.Interfaith partners and community allies stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In North Texas, the North Texas Islamic Council, working with community partners including Clear DFW, helped organize a response so that hate and intimidation would not define the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith leaders prepared to stand alongside their Muslim neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message was simple:You are not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people try to divide communities, sometimes the best response is simply to stand together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the America I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is the America worth defending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facts are bigger than the stereotypes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next time someone tries to define American Muslims through a political talking point, consider the broader picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Millions of Muslims are educated Americans contributing to virtually every major sector of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physicians from Muslim-majority countries represented 4.5% of the U.S. physician workforce in the 2019 JAMA study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muslim Americans serve in government and public institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muslim athletes have represented the United States at the Olympics and won medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muslim scientists, engineers and researchers contribute to America\u2019s technological and scientific enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And generations of Muslim scholars contributed to the development of mathematics, medicine, astronomy and optics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These facts do not describe a foreign population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They describe Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hate cannot make America strongerSome observers have suggested that renewed political attacks and culture-war rhetoric may also serve as distractions from other major national and international controversies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever one\u2019s view of those political debates, Americans should reject the idea that fear of one community should become a political strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer to America\u2019s challenges cannot be scapegoating.It cannot be religious hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It cannot be racial or ethnic bigotry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it cannot be teaching young Americans to fear their neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

America\u2019s greatness has always rested on something bigger:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom of religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equal protection under the law.The right to worship, speak and participate in civic life without fear.Those principles belong to every American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

America at 250<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we should remember that democracy is not simply about celebrating the past.It is about protecting the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future belongs to our children\u2014the Muslim child sitting beside a Christian child, a Jewish child, a Hindu child or a child of no faith at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve an America where differences are understood rather than weaponized.They deserve textbooks that teach history rather than fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve leaders who can disagree without demonizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they deserve to grow up knowing that their faith, race, ethnicity or family background does not determine whether they are considered American.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remain hopeful because I have seen another America.I have seen churches stand with mosques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have seen rabbis, pastors, imams and community leaders work together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have seen elected officials defend religious freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have seen ordinary Americans reject hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I have seen communities come together when others tried to tear them apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

America is great\u2014and America can continue to rise.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But our rise will not come from spewing hate.It will come from respecting one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will come from protecting the rights of our neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will come from teaching our children truth rather than fear.And it will come from recognizing that the contributions of American Muslims are not a footnote to American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are part of American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we celebrate 250 years, perhaps that is the America we should recommit ourselves to building.An America where liberty truly means liberty.Where justice truly means justice.And where the words \u201cfor all\u201d really mean all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
