{"id":640,"date":"2026-01-21T11:47:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T11:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=640"},"modified":"2026-01-21T11:47:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T11:47:14","slug":"na-passes-bill-allowing-confidentiality-of-lawmakers-asset-declarations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=640","title":{"rendered":"NA Passes Bill Allowing Confidentiality of Lawmakers\u2019 Asset Declarations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>ISLAMABAD:<\/strong> The <strong>National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Elections Amendment Bill, 2026<\/strong>, seeking to allow the <strong>withholding of public disclosure of lawmakers\u2019 assets and liabilities<\/strong> in cases where such disclosure is deemed to pose a <strong>serious threat to the life or safety<\/strong> of a member of parliament or their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill proposes an amendment to <strong>Section 138 of the Elections Act<\/strong>, inserting a new proviso that empowers the <strong>speaker of the relevant assembly or the chairman of the Senate<\/strong> to restrict public publication of a member\u2019s asset details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposed law, a member may apply for non-publication of their asset declaration, and the speaker or chairman may approve the request through a <strong>written ruling delivered in the chamber<\/strong>, if it is determined that public disclosure would endanger the member or their family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, such exemption would be <strong>time-bound<\/strong>, valid for a period <strong>not exceeding one year at a time<\/strong>, and subject to the condition that a <strong>complete and true statement of assets and liabilities<\/strong> is submitted <strong>confidentially to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill was moved in the lower house by <strong>Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Shazia Atta Marri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation will now be sent to the <strong>Senate for approval<\/strong> and will require <strong>presidential assent<\/strong> before becoming law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Law on Asset Declarations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Under existing provisions of the Elections Act, members of the <strong>National Assembly, Senate, and provincial assemblies<\/strong> are required to submit annual statements of their <strong>assets and liabilities<\/strong>, including those of their <strong>spouses and dependent children<\/strong>, to the ECP by <strong>December 31<\/strong> each year. The law also mandates the ECP to <strong>publish these declarations in the official gazette<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background: Lawmakers\u2019 Membership Suspensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The development comes a week after the <strong>Election Commission of Pakistan suspended the memberships of 159 lawmakers<\/strong> across various legislatures for failing to submit their financial statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the ECP notification, those suspended included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>32 MNAs<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>50 Punjab Assembly members<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>33 Sindh Assembly lawmakers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>28 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>7 Balochistan Assembly members<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>9 Senators<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the suspended senators were <strong>Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik<\/strong>, <strong>PML-N\u2019s Abid Sher Ali<\/strong>, and <strong>PTI\u2019s Murad Saeed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ECP also suspended <strong>50 Punjab Assembly members<\/strong>, including <strong>Rana Sikandar Hayat, Adnan Dogar, and Aamir Hayat Hiraj<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sindh, <strong>33 assembly members<\/strong> were suspended, including <strong>Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah<\/strong>, <strong>former chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah<\/strong>, and <strong>provincial minister Saeed Ghani<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, memberships of <strong>28 KP Assembly lawmakers<\/strong> and <strong>seven Balochistan Assembly members<\/strong> were suspended for non-compliance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Elections Amendment Bill, 2026, seeking to allow the withholding of public disclosure of lawmakers\u2019 assets and liabilities in cases where such disclosure&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":641,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[312,523,525,524,526],"class_list":["post-640","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan","tag-election-commission-of-pakistan","tag-elections-amendment-bill-2026","tag-lawmakers-assets-disclosure","tag-national-assembly-pakistan","tag-parliamentary-legislation"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
