DAVOS:<\/strong> European leaders issued a firm warning on Tuesday against any US move to take control of Greenland<\/strong>, pledging an \u201cunflinching\u201d response<\/strong> to Washington\u2019s threats, even as US President Donald Trump<\/strong> said he was open to holding meetings in Davos<\/strong> over his controversial plans regarding the autonomous Danish territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked ahead of his departure for the World Economic Forum (WEF)<\/strong> in Switzerland how far he was prepared to go, Trump replied cryptically: \u201cYou\u2019ll find out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a lot of meetings scheduled on Greenland, and I think things are going to work out pretty well,\u201d Trump told reporters, adding that the issue would feature prominently during his Davos engagements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the WEF, European leaders closed ranks against Trump\u2019s increasingly aggressive America First<\/strong> agenda, while Greenland\u2019s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/strong> warned that his island nation of just 57,000 people<\/strong> must be prepared for all scenarios, including the possibility of military force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> led the European response, cautioning that Trump\u2019s approach risked pushing US-EU relations into a \u201cdownward spiral.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

French President Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> warned against US attempts to \u201csubordinate Europe\u201d and described as \u201cunacceptable\u201d<\/strong> Trump\u2019s threat to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent<\/strong> on countries opposing his Greenland plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has repeatedly insisted Greenland is \u201cimperative\u201d for US security<\/strong>, declaring on his Truth Social platform: \u201cThere can be no going back \u2013 on that, everyone agrees!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The standoff has put the transatlantic alliance<\/strong> under severe strain. Europe is now weighing countermeasures after Trump threatened trade levies on eight European countries<\/strong>, although Washington has warned retaliation would be \u201cunwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick<\/strong> urged Europe to keep tensions low, while US trade envoy Jamieson Greer<\/strong> said it would \u201cnot be wise\u201d for the EU to deploy its so-called \u201cbazooka\u201d trade measures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Von der Leyen branded US tariffs a \u201cmistake,\u201d<\/strong> warning they could spark a spiral benefiting only Europe\u2019s adversaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur response will be unflinching, united and proportional,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

NATO at Stake<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Trump said he had a \u201cvery good\u201d call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte<\/strong> and agreed to meet \u201cvarious parties\u201d in Davos. However, former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen<\/strong> warned the Greenland issue had triggered the biggest crisis in NATO\u2019s history<\/strong>, saying the time for flattering Washington was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is the future of NATO and the future of the world order that are at stake,\u201d Rasmussen told AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greenland\u2019s prime minister echoed those concerns, saying military force was unlikely but could not be ruled out<\/strong>, stressing that Greenland\u2019s NATO membership meant any escalation would have global consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump argues the US needs Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese influence<\/strong>, though analysts note Washington already maintains a military base there and that China plays only a limited role in the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EU leaders are set to hold an emergency summit on Greenland in Brussels on Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global Reactions at Davos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

China\u2019s Vice Premier He Lifeng<\/strong>, speaking at the WEF, warned that the world must not return to the \u201claw of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak,\u201d<\/strong> in remarks widely seen as aimed at Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/strong> also voiced support for Greenland, saying Canada must now help defend the international order after decades of benefiting from American hegemony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other major global crises discussed at Davos include Ukraine, Gaza, Iran and Venezuela<\/strong>. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> warned that the Greenland dispute risked diverting attention from the war, cautioning against a \u201closs of focus during a full-scale conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Macron floated the idea of a G7 summit in Paris<\/strong> to discuss Greenland and Ukraine, though later confirmed no meeting had been scheduled. Trump said he would not attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
