The fresh strikes came less than 24 hours after a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2014807\">previous wave<\/a>&nbsp;in which Centcom said 140 Iranian military targets were hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian state media reported two deaths in the latest US strikes that it said targeted large areas across the south and west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person was killed and four wounded at a water pumping station in the southwestern city of Mahshahr, state news agency&nbsp;<em>IRNA<\/em>&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian state media reported that the latest US strikes targeted large areas across southern and western Iran, including Qeshm island and Bandar Abbas near the Strait of Hormuz, and in Khuzestan province bordering Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At 5 p.m. ET today, U.S. Central Command forces began launching more strikes against Iran to continue degrading their ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The Commander in Chief has directed the strikes to hold Iranian\u2026<\/p>&mdash; U.S. Central Command (@CENTCOM) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2076415793458303021?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2015083\/middle-east-rocked-by-heaviest-attacks-since-us-iran-april-ceasefire#futile-efforts\"><\/a>\u2018Futile efforts\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past week\u2019s hostilities have centred on the critical energy trade route, which Iran\u2019s IRGC says is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2014807\/iran-expands-attacks-on-gulf-states-after-us-strikes-says-strait-of-hormuz-closed\">closed<\/a>\u201d but which the US maintains is open to maritime traffic and not controlled by Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2015089\/oil-jumps-3pc-as-new-strikes-by-us-iran-threaten-hormuz-shipments\">Oil prices<\/a>, which tumbled after the announcement of the June agreement, jumped by up to 4.5 per cent, with the US benchmark WTI climbing to nearly $74 a barrel on fears of hampered supply on global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s foreign ministry said the US attacks had \u201ccaused the return of insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz\u201d and \u201crendered futile all efforts\u201d at establishing peace in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mediators, including Pakistan, have been trying to salvage a diplomatic resolution to the war after US President Donald Trump this week said he considered the peace MoU \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2013772\/trump-says-iran-ceasefire-over-vows-to-hit-em-hard\">over<\/a>\u201d but let the door remain open for talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u2018You failed to learn your lessons\u2019: IRGC hits US military targets in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman in further retaliation<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mTGuFFQo8b\">https:\/\/t.co\/mTGuFFQo8b<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Press TV \ud83d\udd3b (@PressTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PressTV\/status\/2076588441341763600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan, a key intermediary in negotiations, on Sunday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2014857\/pakistan-expresses-deep-concern-over-middle-east-escalation-urges-all-sides-to-exercise-restraint\">expressed<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cdeep concern at escalation in regional tensions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called for \u201cde-escalation\u201d on Sunday during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analyst Bader Al-Saif said the escalating attacks would merely delay a permanent agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth sides want to end the impasse on their own terms, and they are increasingly finding it difficult to do so. Hence the return to and increase in the scale of attacks,\u201d said Al-Saif, an associate fellow at Chatham House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat only prolongs what will eventually happen: a negotiated settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz has become key leverage for Iran, with an adviser to the country\u2019s supreme leader on Sunday saying it was more important than \u201cdozens of atomic bombs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2015083\/middle-east-rocked-by-heaviest-attacks-since-us-iran-april-ceasefire#attacks-in-gulf-countries\"><\/a>Attacks in Gulf countries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s IRGC said it had struck US military targets and bases in Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, state media reported on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>IRNA<\/em>&nbsp;cited several statements released by the Guards saying they had attacked Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan, a US military drone command centre in Bahrain and airbases including Ali Al Salem in Kuwait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IRGC also said its missile and drone attacks had set fire to fuel storage tanks and ammunition depots on the Jordanian base used by the US military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said missiles and drones hit Jordan\u2019s Prince Hassan Air Base. The attack was the first phase of the response to the latest US strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also said that a military base at Bahrain\u2019s Sheikh Isa was hit in the second phase of the retaliatory operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Fifth Fleet headquarters is in Bahrain, but it is not at Sheikh Isa, which is a Bahraini base. However, the base has hosted US military operations and aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revolutionary Guards also claimed attacks on Ali Al Salem and Ahmad Al Jaber military bases in Kuwait. Both these bases are Kuwaiti but host the US military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also said an air defence unit destroyed a Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (Lucas) drone belonging to the US military near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas on Monday,&nbsp;<em>Mehr News<\/em>&nbsp;reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no immediate US response to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IRGC statement also said that ending US military interventions in the Strait of Hormuz was the only way to restore vessel passage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It warned that continued interference could lead to greater incidents in the global oil and gas sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air raid alerts sounded in Bahrain, while Kuwait\u2019s army said the country\u2019s forces were intercepting \u201chostile aerial targets\u201d on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jordan\u2019s army said it had intercepted four Iranian missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bahrain\u2019s military accused Iran of committing \u201cheinous attacks with missiles and drones that target civilians\u201d, adding it had shot down a number of Iranian projectiles on Monday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The renewed fighting followed an Iranian attack&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2014807\/iran-expands-attacks-on-gulf-states-after-us-strikes-says-strait-of-hormuz-closed\">early on Sunday<\/a>&nbsp;on a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz whose crew was forced to abandon it after it went up in flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s IRGC said after the incident that \u201cthe Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice and until the end of American interventions in this region,\u201d according to state news agency&nbsp;<em>IRNA<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US Centcom countered on X that the strait was \u201copen to all vessels seeking to lawfully transit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2015083\/middle-east-rocked-by-heaviest-attacks-since-us-iran-april-ceasefire#hormuz-traffic-slows-to-two-month-low\"><\/a>Hormuz traffic slows to two-month low<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz fell in the past day to the lowest level in two months, shipping data showed on Monday, as the renewed US-Iran strikes and attacks on vessels heightened safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipping industry sources said vessels were increasingly switching off their public AIS tracking transponders, making it difficult to determine the full number of ships crossing the waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on available data, oil and gas tanker traffic fell to its lowest level since May 25, according to analysis from Kpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should the renewed escalation in the strait lead to another prolonged closure of Hormuz, the world will find itself in a much tougher spot,\u201d ship broker Gibson said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith global inventories rapidly depleted in recent months, this is a recipe for much tighter supply, higher prices and significant downside risk for tanker markets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/home\/shipid:711949\/zoom:14\">Sea Faith<\/a>&nbsp;oil products tanker was among the few visible vessels sailing towards the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz near the Iranian side of the waterway, with a destination of Sohar, according to LSEG and MarineTraffic ship-tracking data on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz \u201ccontinued at reduced levels\u201d, the US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Centre (JMIC) said in an advisory on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraffic patterns continued to reflect operator caution following recent attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least three pairs of tankers were involved in ship-to-ship transfers (STS) outside of Hormuz off Oman\u2019s coast in the Gulf of Oman, according to the latest satellite imagery from July 11 reviewed by&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ship-to-ship (STS) transfers typically involve the transfer of oil from one vessel to another.
