{"id":5425,"date":"2026-07-01T15:16:56","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T15:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=5425"},"modified":"2026-07-01T15:16:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T15:16:57","slug":"pakistan-demands-release-and-repatriation-of-97-citizens-from-indian-jails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=5425","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan Demands Release and Repatriation of 97 Citizens from Indian Jails"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India on Wednesday exchanged a list to release and repatriate 97 Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These prisoners include 64 civilians and 33 fishermen, the FO said, as it detailed the exchange of prisoner lists between India and Pakistan \u2014 a biannual practice that takes place in pursuance of the Agreement on Consular Access, 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement requires both sides to share the lists of prisoners in each other\u2019s custody on January 1 and July 1&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1921424\">every year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FO said the \u201cgovernment of Pakistan handed over a list of 250 Indian prisoners in Pakistan (52 civilians and 198 fishermen) to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">PR No. 159\/2026 <br><br>Pakistan and India Exchange Lists of Prisoners <br><br>\ud83d\udd17\u2b07\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1lLr3dsacY\">pic.twitter.com\/1lLr3dsacY<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ministry of Foreign Affairs &#8211; Pakistan (@ForeignOfficePk) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ForeignOfficePk\/status\/2072257793462337586?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 1, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added that the Indian government shared a list of 439 prisoners who were \u201cPakistani or believed to be Pakistani\u201d, including 386 civilian prisoners and 53 fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added that India was also urged to ensure the safety, security and well-being of all prisoners who were Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan also called for \u201cexpeditious consular access\u201d to all the prisoners believed to be Pakistani in order to confirm their nationality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government of Pakistan will continue its efforts to ensure the early return of all Pakistani prisoners,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue of prisoners remains a sensitive humanitarian concern in the strained bilateral relations.
