{"id":513,"date":"2026-01-19T06:33:31","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T06:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=513"},"modified":"2026-01-19T10:55:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T10:55:35","slug":"markets-slide-gold-soars-after-trump-threatens-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=513","title":{"rendered":"Markets Slide, Gold Soars After Trump Threatens Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Gold and silver surged to record highs on Monday<\/strong>, while global stock markets slid after former US President <strong>Donald Trump reignited trade war fears<\/strong>, threatening tariffs against several European countries over their opposition to the United States purchasing <strong>Greenland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has intensified geopolitical tensions this month by insisting that Washington must take control of the strategically located North Atlantic island, citing <strong>US national security interests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After talks failed to resolve what he called a \u201cfundamental disagreement\u201d with Denmark over the autonomous territory, Trump announced plans to impose <strong>new tariffs on eight European countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposal, <strong>10% tariffs<\/strong> would be imposed from <strong>February 1<\/strong>, rising to <strong>25% from June 1<\/strong>, on imports from <strong>Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland<\/strong> unless they agree to his demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement triggered immediate backlash. In a joint statement, the affected countries warned that <strong>tariff threats risk damaging transatlantic relations<\/strong> and could spark a \u201cdangerous downward spiral\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany\u2019s Foreign Minister <strong>Johann Wadephul<\/strong> said the move also jeopardised a trade agreement signed last year between the <strong>United States and the European Union<\/strong>, adding that its continuation now appeared unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron\u2019s<\/strong> aides said Paris may urge the EU to activate its <strong>\u201canti-coercion instrument\u201d<\/strong>, a never-before-used measure that allows restrictions on imports of goods and services into the 27-nation bloc, home to around <strong>450 million people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Bloomberg, EU member states are also discussing potential <strong>retaliatory tariffs on \u20ac93 billion ($108bn) worth of US goods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The escalating trade tensions rattled global markets, pushing investors toward <strong>safe-haven assets<\/strong> already buoyed by Trump\u2019s recent threats against Iran and political instability in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gold climbed to a record <strong>$4,690.59 per ounce<\/strong>, while silver jumped to <strong>$94.12<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asian stock markets largely declined, with losses seen in <strong>Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore and Wellington<\/strong>, while <strong>Seoul and Taipei<\/strong> posted modest gains. European and US futures also fell sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>US dollar weakened<\/strong>, while the <strong>euro, pound sterling and Japanese yen<\/strong> gained ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at <strong>Saxo Markets<\/strong>, said investors were closely watching whether the rhetoric would turn into concrete policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if the immediate tariff threat is negotiated down, the long-term risk is rising fragmentation, politicised trade, and higher uncertainty for businesses and investors,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, markets largely ignored fresh data showing <strong>China\u2019s economy grew 5% last year<\/strong>, meeting official targets, though growth slowed significantly in the final quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors in Seoul and Taipei also brushed off comments from US Commerce Secretary <strong>Howard Lutnick<\/strong>, who warned that South Korean and Taiwanese chipmakers could face <strong>100% tariffs<\/strong> if they fail to expand manufacturing operations in the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gold and silver surged to record highs on Monday, while global stock markets slid after former US President Donald Trump reignited trade war fears, threatening tariffs against several European countries&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":514,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9],"tags":[427,423,424,425,426],"class_list":["post-513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy","tag-global-markets","tag-gold-prices","tag-silver-prices","tag-trade-war-fears","tag-trump-tariffs"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
