{"id":5128,"date":"2026-06-20T15:59:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T15:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=5128"},"modified":"2026-06-20T15:59:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T15:59:56","slug":"us-qatar-discuss-release-mechanism-for-frozen-iranian-funds-under-new-agreement-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=5128","title":{"rendered":"US, Qatar Discuss Release Mechanism for Frozen Iranian Funds Under New Agreement: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WASHINGTON: The United States is working with Qatar on a mechanism that could allow billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets to be used for humanitarian purposes under the recently signed agreement between Washington and Tehran, according to media reports on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed plan, which is still under discussion and requires approval from Iran, would initially provide access to $6 billion in Iranian funds currently held in Qatar, The Wall Street Journal reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the proposed arrangement, Qatar would allow the purchase of food, medicine, and other humanitarian goods ordered by Iran\u2019s central bank, with payments made through frozen Iranian assets, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mechanism could later become a model for managing other Iranian funds frozen in countries including China, India, Iraq, and Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the report, Iran is seeking the release of a portion of an estimated $24 billion in blocked assets as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the agreement signed earlier this week, the United States committed to making Iran\u2019s frozen assets \u201cfully available for use\u201d and negotiating a mechanism for their release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funds would become accessible as long as Iran continues to engage productively in ongoing negotiations, the report said, citing a US official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven limited asset releases function as both economic lifelines and political signals of de-escalation,\u201d Sanam Vakil, Middle East director at Chatham House, told the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said such measures represent some of the few practical incentives available to help Iran stabilize its currency and reduce domestic economic pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report added that the proposed arrangement would be separate from the revenue Iran is expected to generate from oil sales, which Washington agreed to allow after the signing of the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discussions on the Qatar-based mechanism reportedly began in late May during talks in Doha involving Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and other Iranian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics of the agreement have argued that it provides economic relief to Iran before major progress is achieved on its nuclear program, while supporters say it could encourage negotiations and help reduce tensions across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian electronically signed the \u201cIslamabad Memorandum of Understanding,\u201d which is aimed at paving the way for ending the war launched by Washington and Tel Aviv against Iran on February 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States and Iran were scheduled to hold direct talks in Switzerland on Friday to begin a 60-day negotiation period, but Tehran postponed the meeting in protest over what it called \u201ccontinued\u201d Israeli ceasefire violations in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a ceasefire was secured on April 8, Pakistan hosted the highest-level direct talks between the two countries on April 12-13 since they cut diplomatic ties in 1979.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON: The United States is working with Qatar on a mechanism that could allow billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets to be used for humanitarian purposes under the recently&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":5129,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[2410,1320,254],"class_list":["post-5128","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world","tag-iranian-funds","tag-qatar","tag-united-states"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
