{"id":502,"date":"2026-01-19T06:14:46","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T06:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=502"},"modified":"2026-01-19T06:14:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T06:14:46","slug":"deadly-train-collision-in-southern-spain-leaves-21-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=502","title":{"rendered":"Deadly Train Collision in Southern Spain Leaves 21 Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A deadly collision between two high-speed trains in southern Spain has left at least <strong>21 people dead and more than 100 injured<\/strong>, after one train derailed and crashed into another on an adjacent track on Sunday evening, officials confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accident occurred near <strong>Adamuz in C\u00f3rdoba province<\/strong> when an Iryo high-speed train travelling from <strong>Malaga to Madrid<\/strong> derailed at around <strong>6:40pm local time<\/strong>, shortly after leaving C\u00f3rdoba. The derailed train struck a <strong>Renfe-operated train heading from Madrid to Huelva<\/strong>, forcing it off the tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spanish rail network operator <strong>Adif<\/strong> said the derailment caused both trains to leave the tracks, triggering a major emergency response. Police sources confirmed at least 21 fatalities, while state broadcaster TVE reported around <strong>100 injured<\/strong>, including <strong>25 in critical condition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The driver of one of the trains was among those killed, according to TVE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency crews described the scene as <strong>\u201chorrific\u201d<\/strong>, with mangled metal, overturned carriages, and passengers trapped inside. C\u00f3rdoba fire chief <strong>Paco Carmona<\/strong> said rescue teams were still working to free people from narrow, crushed compartments, adding that bodies had to be removed to reach survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than <strong>300 passengers<\/strong> were on board the Iryo train, while around <strong>100 passengers<\/strong> were travelling on the Renfe service. Survivors reported violent shaking moments before the derailment, followed by darkness as power was cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Footage shared by passengers showed staff instructing people to remain calm, conserve phone batteries, and assist others with first aid.
