{"id":4899,"date":"2026-06-16T07:44:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T07:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=4899"},"modified":"2026-06-16T07:44:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T07:44:09","slug":"us-air-force-b-52-bomber-crashes-in-california-all-8-crew-members-killed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=4899","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force B-52 bomber crashes in California, all 8 crew members killed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CALIFORNIA: A US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed during takeoff on Monday at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California\u2019s Mojave Desert, killing all eight crew members aboard, according to Air Force officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eight-engine jet aircraft, designed to carry a wide range of nuclear and conventional weapons, was conducting a routine test mission when it crashed on the runway shortly after becoming airborne, Air Force Colonel James Hayes said during a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large column of black smoke rose from the crash site and could be seen from miles away following the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colonel Hayes said the aircraft was carrying a \u201cmixed crew\u201d comprising government civilian employees, government contractors, and uniformed military personnel. Aerospace company Boeing, which designed and manufactured the bomber, confirmed that two of its employees were among those killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flight was part of a radar modernisation programme, Hayes said. He added that the cause of the crash had not yet been determined and an investigation was underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force officials did not release the names of the victims, saying the process of informing their families was still ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aerial footage from the crash site, located around 100 miles north of Los Angeles, showed a large scorched and smoldering area of desert land stretching beyond the size of a football field. Emergency vehicles were seen moving around the perimeter, while no major pieces of wreckage were visible from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayes said the crash was immediately classified as \u201cunsurvivable\u201d. Due to damage to the runway, Edwards Air Force Base suspended all operations until at least Tuesday. However, he clarified that activities outside the base would continue as normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edwards Air Force Base, a major flight-testing facility established in the 1930s around a dry lake bed, covers nearly 481 square miles of the Mojave Desert and is the Air Force\u2019s largest airfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base has a historic role in aviation, including Chuck Yeager\u2019s 1947 flight in the Bell X-1 aircraft that broke the sound barrier, testing of the X-15 aircraft, and the first landings of NASA\u2019s space shuttles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Backbone of US bomber fleet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The B-52 Stratofortress, a long-range subsonic bomber capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds of weapons and equipment, has remained a key part of the US strategic bomber fleet for decades, according to the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The swept-wing aircraft can carry a wide variety of weapons, including cluster bombs, gravity bombs, precision-guided missiles, and nuclear warheads. According to an Air Force fact sheet, it can operate at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet and has a combat range exceeding 8,000 miles without aerial refuelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday\u2019s crash was the first B-52 Stratofortress accident since May 2016, when a bomber of the same type crashed on the island of Guam, according to the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives, a Geneva-based organisation that tracks aviation accidents worldwide. All seven crew members aboard that aircraft survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only B-52H models remain in service with the US Air Force.
