{"id":4751,"date":"2026-06-10T17:24:44","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T17:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=4751"},"modified":"2026-06-10T17:24:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T17:24:45","slug":"former-taliban-commander-jailed-for-42-years-by-us-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=4751","title":{"rendered":"Former Taliban Commander Jailed for 42 Years by US Court"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NEW YORK: A former Afghan Taliban commander convicted of abducting a journalist and orchestrating attacks that killed American troops in 2008 was sentenced to 42 years in prison by a US court on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haji Najibullah, 50, was accused by US prosecutors of kidnapping an American journalist \u2014 later identified as New York Times reporter David Rohde \u2014 along with two Afghan civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was also held responsible for the deaths of three US soldiers and an Afghan interpreter in a June 2008 attack carried out by fighters under his command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Najibullah was arrested in Ukraine and extradited to the United States in 2020 to face terrorism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the US Department of Justice, he pleaded guilty last year to hostage-taking and providing material support for acts of terrorism resulting in death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose who harm Americans and engage in acts of terrorism will be hunted down and brought to justice, no matter how long it takes,\u201d Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement following the sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rohde was kidnapped in Afghanistan in November 2008 along with his translator and driver.
