It added that all personnel aboard the helicopter embraced martyrdom and that no survivors were found. The ISPR further announced that a board of inquiry had been constituted to determine the exact technical cause of the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with all ranks of the Pakistan Army, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and extended their condolences to the families of the deceased personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pakistan Army Aviation Corps began operating the Russian-made Mi-17 transport helicopters in the late 1990s. Widely regarded as dependable workhorses of the aviation fleet, the helicopters have been extensively used in military and counter-terrorism operations. Due to their heavy operational role, the fleet has experienced considerable strain over the years. To support its continued service, the United States assisted Pakistan in refurbishing and overhauling 22 Mi-17 helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest tragedy adds to a series of military aviation accidents in recent years. In September 2025, five military personnel were martyred when an army helicopter crashed in Gilgit-Baltistan\u2019s Diamer district, reportedly due to a technical fault. A month earlier, in August 2025, a rescue helicopter operated by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government crashed in Mohmand district amid adverse weather conditions, killing two pilots and three crew members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan also witnessed two army helicopter crashes during the second half of 2022. On August 2 that year, the wreckage of a missing army helicopter was discovered in Balochistan\u2019s Lasbela district. All six individuals on board, including Commander 12 Corps Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali, embraced martyrdom. The following month, another military helicopter crashed during a flying mission near Khost in Balochistan\u2019s Harnai district, resulting in the martyrdom of six army personnel, including two majors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier incidents include a December 2021 crash in the Siachen area of Gilgit-Baltistan\u2019s Ghanche district, in which two army pilots lost their lives. In 2020, four military personnel embraced martyrdom when an army helicopter conducting a casualty evacuation mission crashed due to technical reasons in Astore district.
