The crowd responded with enthusiastic chants in his support.

Highlighting his affection for the mountainous region, Nawaz said he had always loved Gilgit-Baltistan and its people. He noted that the people of the area held a special place in his heart and said this connection made him deeply concerned about the region’s condition.

Referring to his journey from the airport, Nawaz criticised the state of local infrastructure, saying the poor condition of the roads had deeply saddened him. He questioned what had happened to the Gilgit he once knew and lamented that development funds meant for the people had not been utilised properly.

The former premier pointed to the large number of potholes on roads and recalled that the PML-N government had previously undertaken major road construction projects. He questioned why those initiatives had not been extended to Gilgit as originally envisioned.

Without directly attacking any political party or government, Nawaz said those who had been given the opportunity to serve the country should explain why they had neglected the region. He maintained that the PML-N sought public support on the basis of its performance rather than criticism of political opponents.

Nawaz recalled infrastructure projects launched during his tenure, including a major road network that he said should have been extended beyond its current limits and eventually connected to Khunjerab. He noted that the road project reaching Skardu had cost around Rs50 billion and stressed that such development was the right of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan rather than a favour.

He also highlighted several projects completed under PML-N governments, including hospitals, power plants and hydropower facilities. In a pointed remark, he asked supporters whether any other political party had delivered comparable development projects in the region, drawing a negative response from the crowd.

Expressing concern about aviation infrastructure, Nawaz said the airport remained largely unchanged since his tenure and had not been expanded despite the growing tourism potential of the area. He promised to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and advocate for improvements that would allow larger commercial aircraft to operate in Gilgit.

The PML-N president praised the reduction in travel time between Gilgit and Skardu achieved through road improvements, saying a journey that once took nine hours could now be completed in three. He argued that such projects had significantly improved the lives of local residents.

Nawaz also criticised the failure to complete many development schemes launched in the region. He pointed to the immense potential of Gilgit-Baltistan for generating hydropower and solar energy and described the prolonged electricity outages faced by residents as unacceptable. According to him, load-shedding in some areas exceeds 20 hours during winter and reaches up to 12 hours in summer.

He pledged to raise the issue of power shortages with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying that regardless of the election outcome, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan deserved better services and could not continue to be deprived of basic necessities.

The former premier further announced that he would encourage both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to visit the region. He also promised to personally visit Gilgit-Baltistan every two to three months if the PML-N formed the government there.

During his speech, Nawaz reflected on his removal from office in 2017 and recalled that his government had established a committee to examine Gilgit-Baltistan’s share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. He suggested that the people also bore some responsibility for allowing him to be removed from power and questioned why he had been forced into exile and imprisonment.

Describing Gilgit-Baltistan as the centre of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Nawaz called for accelerated development in the region. He proposed the introduction of electric buses, expansion of healthcare facilities and enhancement of other public services.

He also pledged to expand the cancer hospital established by the PML-N in the region and promised housing loan schemes for residents as well as interest-free loans for young entrepreneurs. Additionally, he vowed to establish a women’s university if his party was elected to govern Gilgit-Baltistan.

Referring to the upcoming elections, Nawaz told residents that polling day would effectively be their “exam day” and urged them to make the right choice at the ballot box.

As part of his visit, Nawaz was also scheduled to meet PML-N candidates contesting the elections. Accompanying him were Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Inter-Provincial Coordination Minister Rana Sanaullah, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, senators Pervaiz Rasheed and Anusha Rahman, and MPA Kazim Ali Pirzada.

Upon his arrival, Nawaz was welcomed by Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam, his son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar, former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman and other party leaders.

Earlier in the day, the PML-N announced on X that the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission had issued a no-objection certificate permitting Nawaz Sharif to visit the region and lead the party’s election campaign.

Although Nawaz was elected as a member of the National Assembly in the 2024 general elections, he rarely appears in public. Nevertheless, he remains the principal decision-maker within the PML-N and serves as a political mentor to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The former prime minister had previously promised in April that, if elected in Gilgit-Baltistan, the PML-N would prioritise development projects and economic progress in the region.

Meanwhile, senior PML-N leader and former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique addressed a separate gathering in Skardu, where he called for a comprehensive strategy to resolve Gilgit-Baltistan’s long-standing constitutional status.

Rafique questioned how long the issue would remain unresolved, arguing that while the Kashmir dispute was important, the future and rights of Gilgit-Baltistan’s people were equally significant. He stressed that parliament should openly debate the matter and said all political parties, state institutions and security agencies shared responsibility for advancing the region’s interests.

He also advocated for a fair share of the NFC Award for both Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). According to Rafique, Nawaz Sharif would unveil the party’s charter and future plans during his visit to the region.

Acknowledging development challenges, Rafique said no government could resolve all issues within a single five-year term. However, he argued that governments could establish a clear direction for future progress, adding that the PML-N had laid such foundations during its previous tenure.

Pointing out that the region had already experienced governments led by three different political parties, he urged voters to support whichever party had delivered the most tangible results.

Rafique also highlighted opportunities for economic growth, noting that daily flights to the region could be increased significantly. He said dams, small-scale energy projects, improved internet services and better road connectivity could help address Gilgit-Baltistan’s electricity shortages and accelerate development.

GILGIT: Former prime minister and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed disappointment over the lack of development in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) during a brief visit to the region ahead of…

[13
2264,2039,35
post-4604","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan","tag-gilgit-baltistan","tag-nawaz-sharif","tag-pakistan
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
