{"id":3923,"date":"2026-05-09T15:26:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T15:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=3923"},"modified":"2026-05-09T15:26:46","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T15:26:46","slug":"karachi-police-arrest-narcotics-dealer-extortionist-in-separate-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=3923","title":{"rendered":"Karachi Police Arrest Narcotics Dealer, Extortionist in Separate Operations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>KARACHI:<\/strong> The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on Saturday claimed to have arrested an alleged supplier of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, and an extortion suspect in separate operations carried out in Karachi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to SIU Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Samiullah Soomro, the SIU, in coordination with a federal civilian intelligence agency, conducted a joint raid at the Lyari riverbed following a tip-off. During the operation, the suspected narcotics dealer was arrested in an injured condition after what police described as an \u201cencounter\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The officer claimed that the arrested man was a notorious dealer involved in the supply of heroin and crystal meth across the city. He added that the suspect had been operating in the narcotics trade since 2019 alongside his two brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SSP Soomro said the suspect was previously arrested in 2019 by the Site Superhighway Industrial Area police in connection with a robbery case and was later sent to jail. After his release, he allegedly resumed criminal activities and, together with his brothers, began selling drugs in several areas including New Karachi, 4-K Chowrangi, Allah Wali Chowrangi, Power House, and nearby localities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a separate action, the SIU also arrested an alleged extortionist near People\u2019s Chowrangi in the Jamshed Quarters area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SIU SSP said the suspect was affiliated with an extortion gang headed by Sameer, the son of former gang leader Mama Bashir. According to police, the group has been operating in District East and is allegedly involved in collecting extortion money from wine shops, biryani centres, cardboard factories, printing presses, and other businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police further claimed that the arrested suspect and other members of the gang were also involved in drug trafficking and various street crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arrests come amid growing concerns over rising extortion activities in Karachi. In October 2025, the city\u2019s business community voiced alarm over a sharp increase in extortion-related incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati), citing official reports, stated that 96 extortion cases were registered in Karachi during 2025. District Central recorded the highest number of cases at 37, followed by District West with 20, District East with 15, and District City with 12. The data also showed five cases reported in Malir and three in Korangi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, in December 2025, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar said that five major extortion networks operating from abroad were active in Karachi.
