LAHORE: At least four children were killed and 20 people were injured when the roof of a classroom at a private school in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, collapsed on Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The district administration\u2019s preliminary report confirmed the casualties. According to the report, the injured include 16 students, two teachers, and two labourers. The report is available with Dawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It stated that the incident occurred around noon, after which rescue teams and ambulances were immediately dispatched to the site. Initial rescue responders reached the location within four minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad told Dawn that rescue personnel, district administration officials, and local residents all took part in the operation to pull students and teachers out from under the debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

District Education Authority Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Waqas Gill also informed Dawn that he was present at the site while rescue and search operations were ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He confirmed that all injured individuals were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the district administration\u2019s report, initial findings revealed that construction work for an extension of the school building was underway when the classroom roof collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report added that sand and bricks had been placed on the roof, causing it to become overloaded. As a result, the structure could not bear the weight and collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the report was issued, CEO Waqas Gill had assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and action would be taken against the school administration for allegedly compromising student safety by carrying out construction work during school hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also taken notice of the incident and has sought a detailed report from the relevant authorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
