LAHORE: In a major step toward transforming public transport infrastructure, the Punjab Government has entered into a landmark agreement with Pakistan Railways to introduce the province\u2019s first high-speed train service while upgrading regional rail networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi. The initiative is designed to connect major cities with faster, safer, and more modern rail services aligned with international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the center of the project is a flagship high-speed train connecting Lahore and Rawalpindi. Covering a distance of around 280 kilometers, the train is expected to reduce travel time to just 2 hours and 15 minutes, offering a rapid and efficient alternative to road travel between the two key cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond the main corridor, the project includes a broad expansion of regional connectivity through the introduction of eight new local routes. These routes will span approximately 1,415 kilometers and link over 20 regions across Punjab and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Planned connections include Shahdara to Narowal and onward to Sialkot, Raiwind through Kasur and Pakpattan to Lodhran, Sheikhupura to Shorkot via Jaranwala, and Lalamusa to Sargodha through Malikwal. Additional routes will connect Faisalabad to Shahinabad via Chak Jhumra, as well as an inter-provincial line from Kot Addu through Dera Ghazi Khan to Kashmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say the initiative is not limited to increasing speed but represents a comprehensive modernization of Pakistan\u2019s railway system. Speaking on the occasion, Hanif Abbasi highlighted that the project aims to introduce European-standard rail travel for millions of citizens, alongside major safety improvements such as automated, unmanned railway crossings to reduce accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plan also includes the procurement of new engines and modern coaches by the Punjab Government to enhance reliability and passenger comfort. In parallel, a 40-kilometer \u201cGreen Park\u201d corridor will be developed between Shahdara and Raiwind, featuring hundreds of thousands of trees to create a scenic travel experience similar to European rail routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, key railway stations\u2014particularly Lahore Railway Station\u2014will undergo extensive renovation, including improved parking facilities and upgraded aesthetics to boost both passenger convenience and tourism appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project has been described as a transformative vision for the province\u2019s transport sector.
