ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan is fast-tracking a plan to provide subsidised petrol to motorcyclists following a sharp increase in fuel prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the proposed scheme, eligible users may receive up to 20 litres of petrol per month at reduced rates to ease the financial burden on low-income commuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to sources, the subsidy will initially be limited to 70cc motorcycles. The plan suggests a price reduction of up to Rs100 per litre through a quota-based system, with implementation for motorcycles and rickshaws expected as early as next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To support the rollout, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has developed a mobile application that will allow users to register their motorcycles and access the subsidy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only registered vehicles will qualify, while unregistered or pending registrations will be excluded from the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say the proposal will soon be presented to Shehbaz Sharif for final approval. Higher-capacity and luxury motorcycles are unlikely to be included in the initial phase of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move comes after the government announced a significant increase in petrol prices. Speaking at a press conference, Ali Pervaiz Malik confirmed that the new petrol price has been set at Rs458.40 per litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The petroleum minister attributed the hike to rising global energy prices driven by ongoing regional conflict. He stated that the situation has forced the government to make difficult but necessary decisions, as crude oil prices continue to surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
