ISLAMABAD: A proposal to impose a nationwide smart lockdown was opposed by provincial governments during a high-level meeting of the national leadership chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari, sources told Geo News on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to sources, the meeting reviewed the option of enforcing smart lockdowns across the country, however provinces disagreed and resisted implementing the measure at the national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting also discussed austerity measures as the government continues efforts to protect livelihoods while managing the economic impact of rising global oil prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to further tightening austerity measures and ensuring full implementation of energy and fuel conservation steps, the sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The federal government urged provinces to contribute to the Rs254 billion relief package, stressing the need for a collective response to the evolving situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sub-committee comprising provincial finance ministers was constituted to reassess proposals related to smart lockdowns. The committee is scheduled to meet to review recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forum agreed that coordinated efforts between the federation and provinces would be essential to navigate the challenges while prioritising economic stability and resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the conflict that began on February 28 following US and Israeli strikes on Iran has expanded across the Middle East. Yemen\u2019s Iran-aligned Houthis recently launched attacks on Israel, raising concerns over shipping lanes around the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran\u2019s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 through which about one-fifth of global oil supply passes \u2014 has pushed Brent futures up by 59% in March, their highest monthly gain on record, while WTI crude rose 58%, the biggest increase since May 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
