TEHRAN: Iran\u2019s parliament is preparing legislation to impose transit tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to media reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by Al Jazeera, Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim said the chairman of parliament\u2019s Civil Affairs Committee confirmed that a draft law has been prepared and will soon be finalised by the legislature\u2019s legal team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official stated that the proposed legislation would enable Iran to collect fees from vessels transiting the strategic waterway to help ensure maritime security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described the proposal as a \u201cnatural step,\u201d noting that duties are commonly charged when goods move through other international corridors. Under the plan, ships and oil tankers using the Strait of Hormuz would pay transit charges as Iran provides security in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
