{"id":2406,"date":"2026-03-20T11:01:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T11:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=2406"},"modified":"2026-03-20T11:01:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T11:01:29","slug":"pakistan-rejects-indias-un-remarks-defends-indus-waters-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=2406","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan rejects India\u2019s UN remarks, defends Indus Waters Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has strongly rejected what it termed \u201cbaseless remarks\u201d by India at the United Nations, accusing New Delhi of undermining the Indus Waters Treaty and politicising water-related issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exchange took place during a high-level UN event marking World Water Day, where Pakistan\u2019s Second Secretary Aleena Majeed exercised her right of reply following comments by the Indian representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the session, India\u2019s envoy stated that New Delhi would continue to keep the treaty \u201cin abeyance\u201d until Pakistan takes what it described as credible and irreversible action against terrorism. The Indian side also argued that changing technological, environmental and demographic factors necessitate revisions to the decades-old accord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to the remarks, Majeed termed the assertions unfounded and said she was compelled to respond. She emphasised that the Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, has withstood wars, crises and prolonged tensions between the two countries, including the dispute over Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said India\u2019s unilateral move to place the treaty in abeyance last year represents a serious deviation from its legal obligations, noting that the agreement contains no provision allowing either party to suspend or modify it unilaterally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Majeed warned that such actions amount to the \u201cweaponisation of water\u201d for political purposes, posing a threat to millions of people dependent on the Indus river system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to proceedings at the Court of Arbitration, she noted that a 2025 supplemental award reaffirmed the treaty\u2019s continued validity and binding dispute resolution mechanisms.
