{"id":2116,"date":"2026-03-11T06:39:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=2116"},"modified":"2026-03-11T06:39:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T06:39:15","slug":"middle-east-conflict-disrupts-indian-airlines-flights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldwatchalert.com\/?p=2116","title":{"rendered":"Middle East Conflict Disrupts Indian Airlines Flights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>New Delhi:<\/strong> Airspace restrictions in the Middle East amid the ongoing conflict involving <strong>Iran<\/strong>, the <strong>United States<\/strong> and <strong>Israel<\/strong> have created fresh challenges for Indian airlines, which are already barred from using <strong>Pakistan<\/strong>\u2019s airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry data shows that the situation has disrupted a large number of international flights operated by major Indian carriers <strong>Air India<\/strong> and <strong>IndiGo<\/strong>, particularly on routes connecting India with the Middle East, Europe and North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to aviation analytics firm <strong>Cirium<\/strong>, the two airlines did not operate around 64 percent of their 1,230 scheduled flights to these regions over the past 10 days due to airspace restrictions and operational disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviation expert <strong>Amit Mittal<\/strong> described the situation as a \u201cdouble whammy\u201d for Indian airlines operating international routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan imposed a ban on Indian carriers using its airspace in April last year following heightened military tensions between the two neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts say the latest geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are likely to increase operational costs for airlines. Financial services firm <strong>HSBC<\/strong> has warned that ongoing disruptions could place a significant burden on the profitability of Indian carriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some routes have resumed in recent days, IndiGo continues to face operational challenges due to its reliance on six long-range <strong>Boeing<\/strong> aircraft leased from <strong>Norse Atlantic Airways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the aircraft remain registered in Norway, they must comply with advisories issued by the <strong>European Union Aviation Safety Agency<\/strong>, which has recommended that airlines avoid the airspace of several Middle Eastern countries including Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, the <strong>United Arab Emirates<\/strong> and <strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, IndiGo has been forced to take longer routes via Africa, increasing flight times by up to two hours in some cases, according to data from <strong>Flightradar24<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one recent incident, an IndiGo flight from <strong>Delhi<\/strong> to <strong>Manchester<\/strong> was forced to return to Delhi after air traffic authorities in <strong>Eritrea<\/strong> denied access to their airspace due to confusion over the aircraft\u2019s Norwegian registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, another IndiGo flight travelling from <strong>London<\/strong> to <strong>Mumbai<\/strong> was diverted to <strong>Cairo<\/strong> due to the same issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Air India announced plans to operate 78 additional flights between India and destinations in Europe and the United States over the next week to meet increased travel demand during the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, longer flight routes are significantly increasing travel times and operational costs.
